Teachers need to be excellent communicators and know how to speak to a variety of different people so as to do their job effectively. They need to be able to communicate with students, as well as with parents. In order to be a great teacher, educators worldwide need to understand how to talk to people……not at them.
Why is effective communication important in education?
Effective communication can aid in building and fostering a safe learning environment where students can grow, prosper and learn. The importance of establishing good communication at a young age is fundamental in a child’s development and future learning.
Communication is not only verbal, but also non-verbal therefore, make sure you are paying attention to your body language, for example, are you making eye contact with your students when you are addressing them? Making eye contact shows that you are being supportive and attentive to their needs.
Successful teaching is generally considered to require only 50% knowledge to 50% communication skills. As a result, a teacher should be proficient in all four modes of communication- listening, speaking, reading, and writing- and know how to effectively put this proficiency to use in a school environment.
