This brief article is going to look at communication, teaching is communication and more importantly, and have a better look at one of the most important of the soft skills.
The word communication means the transmission of information. We can do that in three ways: interpersonal communication: face to face, mass communication and virtual communication. What we deal with most, is interpersonal.
Our most fundamental aim, as teachers, is to communicate with our students, as well as with parents and colleagues. We aim to making our lessons engaging, getting our students involved. Fostering a sense of trust is also fundamental. It is the basis of all relationships. The more I trust you, the more I will learn from you. Establishing good teacher student relationships could be by: learning students’ names, understanding their likes and dislikes, praising good work, offering constructive criticism, being observant of how each student normally behaves in the classroom.
Classrooms are becoming increasingly more diverse. Students and teachers now interact with people from different cultural, demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Teachers should develop a knowledge and understanding of various cultures. It helps create a more respectful classroom environment, thus creating and establishing better communication relationships among students understanding that diversity is wealth.
The art of the art of communication involves listening and speaking as well as reading and writing. Teachers need to be highly skilled in all these areas to excel in their profession. Proficient communicators receive information, understand and synthesize it and express themselves at a high level. They make excellent teachers because they are able to transmit knowledge skills and values at the same time, they communicate their caring for the students entrusted to their care. They help motivate students to learn. Communication skills and work motivation have a high influence in the teaching aspect. The teacher’s communication style can influence the interest and attitude of the students in creating a fun and learning atmosphere. An effective communication needs experience, determination and interest towards the profession that has been entrusted to them.
Another form of communication is body language. It is very subtle but very strong. Teachers can better understand a child’s behaviour understanding his body language. Teachers can understand if a student is introvert, a leader, shy, being bullied or bullying himself. This art, obviously needs time and patience.
In conclusion, the art of communication is essential and foremost, the most important skills to master, for a teacher. If we are able to ensure a trusting relationship and have engaged, involved our students well, we will have not only taught a subject but will have helped in a lifelong learning experience.
The transformation of information must become a process of transformation.
