Is your school making the most of digital technologies for teaching and learning?
Discover the digital potential of your school with SELFIE (Self-reflection on Effective Learning by Fostering the use of Innovative Educational technologies) a free, easy-to-use, customisable tool to help schools assess where they stand with learning in the digital age.
SELFIE has a strong basis in research and was developed based on the European Commission framework on promoting digital-age learning in educational organisations. It is an initiative of the European Commission and is funded through the Erasmus programme
It s available for any primary, secondary and vocational schools in Europe and beyond, and in over 30 languages. It can be used by any school – not just those with advanced levels of infrastructure, equipment and technology use.
Designed by and for schools
The tool has been developed with a team of experts from schools, education ministries and research institutes across Europe. Partner institutions include the European Training Foundation, the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP) and UNESCO's Institute for Information Technologies in Education.
School leaders, teachers and students have been involved in creating and testing SELFIE:
5,000 staff and students gave input into the early design of the tool
67,000 people, from 650 schools across Europe, took part in the pilot test
SELFIE was tested in primary schools to ensure it could be understood by younger students
How SELFIE works
CHOOSE YOUR SCHOOL COORDINATOR
If you would like to use SELFIE in your school, the first step is to assign a person or small team to coordinate the exercise.
REGISTER YOUR SCHOOL
Once you've chosen who will coordinate the exercise, you can:
register the school on the SELFIE platform, providing basic information such as type of school (for example primary or secondary), size and location
choose the timing of the SELFIE exercise
select who will take part (for example, which group of students).
TAILOR YOUR QUESTIONS SELFIE lets you select or add questions that match the needs and context of your school. See what you might want to add on top of the standard statements and questions.
START ASKING! Invite students, teachers and school leaders to take part in SELFIE on an anonymous basis. It takes around 30 minutes to complete the questions. Teachers and school leaders can do this at a time that suits them, while we recommend that students answer as part of a lesson.
GET THE RESULTS Once participants have completed the questions, SELFIE generates a report for your school. This shows the aggregated results in a visual and interactive way. These results are fully anonymised - the report belongs to the school and only the school can access it.
DISCUSS AND ACT You can use the findings from SELFIE to see how technologies could support teaching, learning and student assessment in your school. Formulate an action plan and set your priorities.
FINE TUNE YOUR PROGRESS You can repeat the assessment periodically. This will help you gauge progress and see where other changes might be needed.
Benefits
SELFIE involves the whole school community – school leaders, teachers and students – in a 360-degree process covering many areas of school practice.
Because every school is unique, the tool can be customised. Your school can select and add questions and statements to suit your needs.
SELFIE allows all participants to answer questions that match their experience, as students, teachers or school leaders.
SELFIE is free of charge. Answers are anonymised and data is secure.
You can take the assessment from a computer, tablet or smartphone.
On completing SELFIE, each school receives a tailor-made, interactive report which provides both in-depth data and quick insights into strengths and weaknesses.
