Outdoors as a solution!

Indoorization is a wide spreading phenomenon amongst western countries. It all started with the industrial revolution of the 19th century. Before the 1800, children had no access to public education. As we progress through the 19th century education becomes all the more compulsory and wide spread. Young children have the chance to leave the polluted environment of factory labor and engage in two hours long activities, in class!

The enclosed learning environment has been the first choice, at the time, to apply mechanization, to learning. In order to offer a base education to large masses.

Pedagogists like Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel (1782-1852) and Gösta Frohm (1908-1999) have non the less risen concerns, among their societies, about the great impoverishment in a child development that applies to teaching in enclosed classrooms. It basically is a form of sensory deprivation.

Children would miss the chance to explore the complexity of reality and apply all their natural neuro-motor, perception and cognitive skills.

These are the times when Margaret McMillan (1860-1931) makes the courageous attempt to innovate early child education founding the first Open Air Nursery School.

Most recently we have faced a new threat that has encouraged not only education indoor but also social isolation. That threat would obviously go by the name of Covid-19.

What are the advantages of Outdoor education?

Pandemic: Children may be widely spread a part in an open environment, thus reducing the threat of further Covid-19 contagion.

Psychological: It improves self-esteem, self-efficacy, self-awareness and overall well-being.

Social: It let’s children develop skills like cooperation, respect of people and the environment, communication and friendship.

Education: It opens to new ways of teaching and engaging the class. Improves problem solving and environmental awareness.

Physical: Better proprioception, global fitness, strength, resistance and balance.
