Game Based Learning in Education

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between Gaming, Gamification and Game -based learning and why students prefer Game- Based learning over traditional learning strategies? While there are numerous benefits linked to these innovative educational tools, there are also many drawbacks, though, to date, there is not enough evidence to show the negative effects of game- based learning.


Some of the advantages of using games in education are; students tend to be more engaged in the learning process, it may help them in developing problem-solving skills and it encourages them to use critical thinking skills. However, if on the one hand there seems to be a multitude of advantages, there are of course risks and disadvantages linked to the use of games in the classroom.


Potential drawbacks of game-based learning:

  • Too much screen time.

  • Games aren't always created equally.

  • Games can be a source of distraction.

  • It requires a technology learning curve.

  • Doesn't replace traditional learning strategies.

  • Not always aligned to teaching or learning goals.

  • Everyone likes to play, it is an integral part of human nature as well as a fun.

In conclusion, everyone likes to play, it is an integral part of human nature as well as a fun, engaging and creative activity. Playing contributes to physical and mental stimulation, which is why game based learning, more often than not, helps acquire disciplinary and socio-emotional skills.
