Communication in the new Multicultural Society
Understanding how language works to improve our communication and relationships with others

Description and main aims

Draft proposed program

Since the 1970s, scholars from many disciplines have tried to focus their work on achieving greater awareness of the theme of Communication.

Thanks to many studies on Language and Communication, it has been understood that there is no right or wrong way to interact in interpersonal communication: We just speak differently.

Understanding how language works is the main objective of our course. Thanks to linguistics, we study different branches, mainly dealing with the history of grammar or the symbolic representation of language, but sociolinguistics and anthropological linguistics give us a deep understanding of how people use their own language in their everyday life and how different cultures make people’s language different but authentic.

When we grow up, we learn how to use language depending on the country we were born in, our ethnicity, religion, or our class backgrounds, even just being female or male gives us the awareness that there are different ways of speaking.

This course is designed to give teachers an understanding of what cross-cultural communication means, how every single individual such as children, teens, adults, or even older people are involved in the greater world of communication and what is defined as a conversational style.

Analyzing everyday interactions and adapting to other communication styles could be the key to better understanding the problem in a conversation and avoiding all the negative consequences that different conversation styles can cause.

By the end of this course, teachers will:

  • understand the importance of meaning in the communicative process and the role that context and so-called external variables play.

  • know the meaningful connection between gender, power, and discrimination and the various factors that influence our language.

  • know the importance of a cross-cultural approach to analyzing different conversational styles in order to better understand what is behind individuals' conversations.

  • develop a greater awareness of communication and how conversational styles are influenced by gender as well as other cultural, social, and experiential factors.

Target group

Any teachers, working in a public or private school or educational institutions

Like all of our programs, the present one is flexible and adaptable to special requests, depending on the subject taught or on the starting level of the participant.

Furthermore, in line with the JUMP Academy method, our courses are based on a strategic balance between formal and non-formal education, indoor and outdoor education and the team takes care of a very important aspect of international mobility which is the intercultural learning which we develop with short excursions and facilitating the interaction with local partners, especially schools in the area.

We always try to connect our learners to local teachers and students to cooperate in developing innovation and networking for future projects. If possible, inside the program, a morning is spent inside a local school, visiting, observing, and cooperating in the realization of one or more lessons. The proposed program is framed by JUMP, in a European dimension, with an international spirit, even at local level. According to the time of the year and the weather it is possible to change some sessions, excursions and meetings, in cooperation with our network of partners (including schools involved in European projects).
